Young Voices Reimagine War of the Worlds in Tunbridge Wells Radio Drama Project

During the Summer, The Amelia Scott and Assembly Hall Theatre hosted an exciting six-day creative programme that brought together 18 young performers aged 13 to 19 to produce a bold reimagining of Orson Welles’ iconic War of the Worlds radio broadcast.

Led by Bethan Minter, Creative Learning Coordinator with over fifteen years’ experience in youth arts and performance, the programme offered a dynamic and tightly packed schedule. Participants developed skills in voice performance, script writing, sound design, and foley sound effects—learning how to act for audio and craft immersive soundscapes.

A highlight of the week included a masterclass with an expert voice actor, offering professional insight into vocal technique and characterisation. The young creatives also worked with a dedicated tech team to produce incredibly detailed sound effects, supported throughout by professional technicians and a bespoke recording studio built specifically for the programme.

Mickey Powell, Theatre Director commented,

“This project gave young people the chance to explore the power of sound storytelling while developing real-world creative skills. The final recording is a testament to their talent, teamwork, and imagination. It’s vital that we continue to provide opportunities like this for young people to gain hands-on experience and insight into the creative industries, helping them build confidence and pathways into future careers.”

But most importantly what did the young people think.

What They Loved

From smashing glass to crafting soundscapes, the course offered hands-on experiences that sparked creativity and connection:

“I really enjoyed how involved we were in creating the plot and foley sound effects.”
“I loved the script writing and the people are really nice.”
“Learning about tech, recording, and meeting new people who enjoy the same stuff as me.”
“EVERYTHING!”
“Keith, creativity, the cool doors – everything!”

Why did they Join?

“I came last year and it was really fun – I wanted to do some recording.”
“I loved the Shakespeare course last year and wanted to explore voice acting. I knew it wouldn’t be scary because I know Bethan !”
“Because it gives the opportunity to be multiskilled.”
“My dream of becoming a professional voice actor has to start somewhere.”
“I think it’s because the course covers voice work, sound design and foley – all things I like. Also, I get to MEET OTHER HUMANS!”

The programme concluded with a digital recording of the final production, shared with parents to celebrate the group’s achievements.
