Young Fundraiser to ‘Switch On’ Christmas Tree at The Amelia Scott

Over the summer, The Amelia issued a community call-out for granny squares to help create an 8-foot Christmas tree. The project was designed to celebrate creativity, highlight the role of creative health in the community, and mark the upcoming inaugural yarn festival, Yarnival, taking place in March 2026.

“The response has been staggering to say the least,” said Lisa Bridges, Operations Manager, “From a small seed of an idea, volunteers, the local community, and our new Knit & Stitch club have absolutely risen to the challenge. We have received hundreds of granny squares, and we are thrilled that the project has gained so much support.”

A champion of creative health, The Amelia has launched a full annual programme of creative health sessions in 2026. Their Knit & Stitch club has already grown in popularity, offering people the chance to connect and benefit from shared creative activity.

Tunbridge Wells resident Kirsty, best known for her inspirational initiative Kirsty’s Crochet for Cancer, has been invited to be guest of honour at the official switch-on of The Amelia Scott’s crafted Christmas tree.

Kirsty was the natural choice to lead the switch-on ceremony on 21 November. Currently more than halfway through her 70 weeks of chemotherapy, she has simultaneously taken on a remarkable fundraising challenge: crocheting a piece of bunting for every week of her treatment in support of Children with Cancer UK.

To date, Kirsty (age 11) has raised an incredible £78,075, with her sights firmly set on reaching her ambitious £100,000 target. Her efforts not only raise vital funds but also shine a light on resilience, creativity, and the power of community support.

The magnificent tree will be ‘unveiled’ on Friday 21st November at 5pm and is open to all to attend.

The Amelia Scott has a full programme of activities over the festive season, including a Christmas concert, Elf Workshops for children and offers a ‘Warm Welcome Space’ for those who need it over the Winter season.
