Rotherfield Primary School’s Jemison class recently joined us at The Amelia for an exciting day of learning, history, and art. The students were here to complete their Arts Award Discover, and their enthusiasm was evident from the moment they arrived.
Exploring Art and History
The students, already well-versed in various art styles, showed a keen interest in Folk Art. This enthusiasm shone through during our discussion on George Smart, the Tailor of Frant. The kids eagerly asked questions and shared their knowledge, making the discussion lively and interactive.
As they explored The Amelia, they searched for different forms of art and then engaged in a thought-provoking discussion about other artistic disciplines. The class came up with fantastic ideas, broadening their understanding of what can be considered art.
Hands-On Learning in the Workroom
In the Workroom, we delved into the life and work of George Smart. The students learned fascinating facts about him, his artwork, and his poems. This session was not just about history but also about inspiration.
The highlight of the day was when the students planned and started their own George Smart-inspired masterpieces. Using watercolors for their backgrounds and an array of materials like fabric, cloth, felt, and foil for their main characters, they created stunning artworks. Their creations reflected their deep understanding of George Smart and Folk Art, showcasst-block-4ing their talent and creativity.
Reflecting on Their Artistic Journey
The day concluded with a self-evaluation session where the students reflected on their experiences and shared their work with their classmates. This reflection allowed them to appreciate their learning journey and celebrate their artistic achievements.
The Impact of the Arts Award Discover
The Arts Award Discover program at The Amelia provided Jemison class with a unique opportunity to connect with local history, engage with different art forms, and express their creativity. The students left with a deeper appreciation for art and a sense of accomplishment in their artistic endeavors.

The facilitator was well prepared. The room was set up in advance and all resources were available. The children enjoyed their time with Miriam and Christine, and some have gone on to create work on the style of George Smart at home.
Thank you for all the effort that was put into this session. Seeing George Smart’s work first-hand was very helpful to the children.
