Home Educator Careers Taster - Session Three
Job of the month: Helen Brown, Marketing Coordinator, The Amelia
This month, our Home Educators took up the chance to find out what a Marketing Coordinator does.
Helen began the session by asking the Home Educators about their own interests and discovered they themselves had some experience of creating video content and of magazine creation. This shared interest sparked a lively dialogue which continued throughout the session. Helen went on to give the group an overview of her experience in marketing but to do so had to get them to imagine a world without phones, social medial or email - and where TV had just four channels! There was a palpable sense of astonishment in the room at this point as the group digested this information but their interest had been piqued and was even more so as Helen went on to describe her experience designing billboards, making and editing TV commercials, filming bands, working on magazines…
Marketing was a topic which resonated with the group and they continually prompted Helen to share more insights and experience. Appreciating Helen’s explanation as to why targeted marketing is the key to a successful campaign, she was asked,
“Targeted to 500 or untargeted to 2,000?”
“Always targeted!” was Helen’s response - but she was clearly delighted with the question.
Helen then went on to show the Home Educators the Amelia website and explained that it’s her job to keep it up to date. Responding to the learners’ inquisitive minds, she gave them a ‘tour’ of the back end of the website to show them how it works. The word “wow!” summed up their experience of this glimpse into just one aspect of Helen’s work at The Amelia.
“This is really interesting stuff!”
The next step was to explore how analytics show activity on the website. Helen showed the group key pages and, once again, the learners’ intuitive understanding of the topic helped them understand how useful these stats can be and how a carefully placed advert can drive the public to look at other webpages where they will find out more to their advantage.
Finally, Helen explained the importance of budgeting in marketing and was again pushed for more information as the Home Educators asked the key question:
“How do you decide how to split the budget?”
In her clear and concise manner Helen summed up the answer saying you decide which campaigns need the most money and will bring most people in!
“They say you learn new things every day but today I’m learning new things every second!”
So, in terms of careers, what does marketing have to offer?
Helen: “I enjoy marketing because everyday is different and I love seeing the impact of my work. “
Although unsure if marketing was for them, throughout the session, the Home Educators were brimming with enthusiasm. So much so that Helen set them a task should they wish to accept it: design a logo for Home Educators at the Amelia.
So, keep an eye on the website to see if the Home Educator pages benefits from a new look designed by those who know Home Education the best – the Home Educators themselves!
