Home Educator Careers Taster - Session One

Job of the month: Bethan Minter, Creative Learning Coordinator

This month, two Home Educators took up the chance to find out what a Creative Learning Coordinator does.

Why did you come to the session? Mum found it and I ended up enjoying it!

Bethan gave a comprehensive overview of the path which led her to her role. Not only did she provide helpful tips to the young people about how to gain the kind of experience which is invaluable on a CV, but she shared inspiring insights into how she found her own creative ways to conquer the challenges of dyslexia with the help of Stephen Fry and Harry Potter… she isn’t Creative Learning Coordinator for nothing!

Bethan: “Creative Learning is a role where you help people to learn a new (or build up an existing) skill in a creative way or in creative subjects. Skills range from teaching body positivity, sustainability and sewing through a fashion project, to critical thinking, journalism, team-work and communication through documentary film making.”

The Home Educators learnt that key to Bethan’s role is listening – listening to the voices of the young people she is seeking to engage with. Currently this is taking the form of a Youth Survey, so the Home Educators had the chance to take part and discover Bethan’s role in action.

There was a real buzz in the room as the Home Educators played along with Bethan’s ever creative methods of engagement, racing to put sticky notes on walls or selecting chairs to represent a sliding scale in line with their views and opinions. Surveys are certainly not dull when developed by a creative learning expert!

At the end of the session, the home educators were asked for their takeaways about what they’d learnt.

- You need you to have analytical and creative skills.

- Bethan’s pathway to the role included puppet-making, costume creation, teaching, and lots, lots more!

- You need a degree in a creative subject but this needn’t mean uni. For Bethan it was drama school.

- As a teenager, Bethan did peer mentoring.

Finally, two words to describe the environment for the workshop? Calm and peaceful
