SUMMARY:Activist Avenue
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of Tunbridge Wells in a way you’ve never seen before… \nFrom the minds of the Young Producers comes a new trail full of untold stories – be the first to uncover the forgotten histories of radicals like Olive Walton\, Jasper Sprange and Amelia Scott herself. \nAcross the Amelia\, you will travel through the past and investigate the life of each pioneer from Tunbridge Wells’ history. Interact with their stories further by reading about their experiences and completing fun activities! Collect all the stamps along the way in your “Passport Through Time” and perhaps they will leave you a special reward… \nAn experience for all ages. \nThis project is part of our Unlocking Collections Programme\, supported using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden
DESCRIPTION:A major print retrospective of one of Britain’s most celebrated artists \nExperience Howard Hodgkin's vivid world of colour in this exhibition of prints spanning five decades. \nHoward Hodgkin: In a Public Garden brings together more than thirty richly coloured prints by one of Britain's most distinctive modern artists.  \nSpanning five decades\, from 1966 to 2016\, the exhibition offers an engaging introduction to Hodgkin's printmaking. It shows how he used colour\, shape and texture to turn memories\, places and personal encounters into vivid visual experiences.  \nHodgkin is best known as a painter\, but he was also one of Britain's most important printmakers. Born in London in 1932\, he developed a language of bold marks\, layered surfaces and intense colour. Many of the prints in this exhibition are hand-coloured\, giving them a physical presence and emotional depth that reward close looking.  \nThe works range from lyrical city scenes to images inspired by Hodgkin's long connection with India\, as well as prints created for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Although they can appear spontaneous\, they were often made through a slow and highly considered process. Hodgkin experimented with techniques including etching and aquatint\, combining them with hand-painting to create images of remarkable richness.  \nHodgkin's significance was recognised internationally during his lifetime. He won the Turner Prize in 1985\, represented Britain at the Venice Biennale\, and his work has been shown in major museums including Tate Britain\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Reina Sofía in Madrid. Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden invites visitors to experience an artist whose colour\, feeling and imagination continue to resonate today.  \nHoward Hodgkin: In a Public Garden\, a Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Touring Exhibition.  \nImage credit: Howard Hodgkin\, Palm and Window 1990-1991 (detail) – © 2026 The Estate of Howard Hodgkin. SUMMARY:Home Education at The Amelia - Primary
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Amelia for our monthly learning sessions open to home educated children across the borough. \nOur learning sessions are linked to The Amelia’s collections\, are based on enquiry-led learning and are rooted in the National Curriculum. Sessions provide unique opportunities for object-handling and inspiring activities to guide children and their families as they explore our galleries. \nDuration: Standard sessions last 60 mins \nWe aim to provide a fully inclusive service for all our young visitors. Please let us know if there are any SPLD/ or accessibility needs we should be aware of so that we can help support all participants to engage with the session. \nPlease note\, children must be accompanied by their parent/carers and remain their responsibility at all times. \nMonthly themes: \n8 September – Archaeology Adventure\nJoin us for a special exhibition-linked session. The group will start with an introduction to archaeology in the Learning Room\, with the chance to explore artefacts and objects hands-on. The session will conclude in Archaeology Adventure\, our current temporary exhibition. \n13 October – The Story of the Wells – Local History\nIn this session\, the group will discover how and why our town came into existence. Using artefacts to piece together its story from forest\, to popular health resort\, to holiday destination for a princess\, the group will also find out why children from the East End of London would spend their summer holidays here 100 years ago! \n10 November – Dinosaurs and Fossils\nIn this session\, the group are cast as palaeontologists and explore clues about what the world was like millions of years ago. They have the chance to handle a range of fossils from The Amelia’s Collection to investigate how they were made and what they tell us about the past. \n8 December – Generations of Joy\nThis session will take place off-site and provide an enriching opportunity for inter-generational engagement\, with children and care-home residents taking part in Christmas-themed activities together. \n\nContact us to find out more before booking

SUMMARY:Botanical Lino Printing Workshop with Susan Yeates
DESCRIPTION:Join Susan Yeates for a hands-on botanical themed linocut printing workshop this November. Working from leaves\, seed heads and garden finds\, you’ll learn how to translate a botanical subject into a confident single-colour linocut print\, from first sketch through to that satisfying peel-and-reveal moment. Susan has taught linocut for over twenty years and guided more than 3\,000 students through the process. This in-person session distils that experience into a relaxed\, sociable session of carving and printing. No previous printmaking experience is needed\, just a willingness to get a little inky. All materials and tools provided\, you’ll leave with a small collection of your own hand-printed nature studies. \nSusan Yeates is an artist\, author and TEDx speaker. She has written and self-published four books\, and her Search Press titles include Beginner’s Guide to Linocut\, published in 2018\, Sketchbook Challenge and Sketch-a-Day Card Deck. Susan obtained a fine art\, printmaking degree from Loughborough University and has been teaching art courses and workshops both in person and online since 2003. She also co-runs a pottery café in Woking\, Surrey. Susan runs an annual 30-day sketching challenge every January through her website susanyeates.co.uk and on Instagram (@susanyeatesartist) and Facebook\, encouraging people to develop a daily sketching habit. \nSusan lives and works in Woking in Surrey\, UK\, and continues to teach printmaking and sketching through online courses. Susan is passionate about inspiring others to get creative. \nSusan will also be joining us in the afternoon for a talk\, more information here! \nYour purchase today helps to support our work and enables The Amelia to continue to provide free access to the arts\, culture\, learning and creative health programmes for everyone in our community. Thank You!

SUMMARY:Take a Closer Look: Howard Hodgkin
DESCRIPTION:Join a Curator from The Amelia for a short guided tour of the current temporary exhibition Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden. Whether you already know the works of Howard Hodgkin\, or are curious to learn more\, join us to take a closer look. \nThis autumn\, The Amelia Scott presents Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden\, a critically acclaimed exhibition bringing together more than 30 prints spanning five decades of the artist’s career\, from 1966 to 2016. \nOriginally developed by Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery\, this landmark exhibition showcases the work of Howard Hodgkin\, whose vivid use of colour\, expressive brushwork and deeply personal approach to abstraction made him one of Britain’s most distinctive post-war artists. \nFeaturing bold\, gestural compositions that explore memory\, emotion and place\, the exhibition immerses visitors in Hodgkin’s unique visual world. The selected prints reveal the important role printmaking played throughout his practice and demonstrate his extraordinary ability to transform fleeting experiences into powerful images. \nHoward Hodgkin: In a Public Garden\, a Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Touring Exhibition.  \nImage credit: Howard Hodgkin\, Palm and Window 1990-1991 (detail) – © 2026 The Estate of Howard Hodgkin.
